Victim Services

The Attorney General’s Office has responsibility of overseeing the State's efforts to help crime victims on the road to recovery. The office does this in part through the following three units:

Victim Compensation

The Crime Victims Compensation Unit administers awards of compensation in accordance with Ohio's Crime Victims Compensation Law, a law that provides payment to eligible victims of violent crime for their unreimbursed economic losses. Each year the program receives approximately 7,000 new applications to review for awards of compensation. The office renders a decision on each application received, and sends payment to eligible victims and/or the victims' providers for their unreimbursed economic losses.

Attorney General’s Office provides assistance for agencies to help solve sexual assault crimes. Under the Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) Program, the Office reimburses medical facilities up to $532 for each rape kit completed in compliance with established state protocol and for the purpose of gathering evidence for possible prosecution.

Victims Assistance

The Victims Assistance Unit provides federal (VOCA) and state (SVAA) grants to local crime victim assistance programs. These assistance programs include rape crisis centers, domestic violence shelters, guardian ad litem programs, victim advocates in prosecutors' offices, and other providers of direct services to victims.

Missing Children

The Missing Children Clearinghouse Unit maintains the missing children database which lists children from Ohio that have been abducted, lost or run away.
