Prosecuting Crime

Several sections of the Attorney General’s Office assist local law enforcement agencies in prosecuting crime.

The Capital Crimes Section defends death penalty appeals. This team of career prosecutors assists county prosecutors with every phase of death penalty prosecutions — from the indictment and trial through every stage of appeal.

The Special Prosecutions and Criminal Justice Initiatives Sections were created by Attorney General to protect Ohio’s most vulnerable. Combining resources of the Corrections Litigation and Crime Victims sections, experienced criminal prosecutors and investigators assist local prosecutors in child support, physical and sexual abuse cases, Internet and computer crime investigations, and elder abuse cases.

The Health Care Fraud Section is composed of two units: the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit. The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of health care providers accused of defrauding the state’s Medicaid program. In addition, this unit enforces Ohio’s Patient Abuse and Neglect Law, which protects the mentally and physically disabled and the elderly from exploitation and abuse in Ohio’s long-term care facilities. The Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit is responsible for prosecuting claimants and health care providers who defraud the Ohio Workers’ Compensation Program.
