The Internet is a great tool and full of cool things to see and do; from a virtual trip to Saturn to a real-live chat with a friend two states away.

But, before you begin exploring the enormous technology of the superhighway, be sure you are aware of the possible dangers that lurk around corners, so you can be a smart driver.

The following safety tips will help you avoid any unnecessary pit stops during your Internet travels. Keep them in mind when you're on your computer at home or at school.

• Never give out personal information such as your name, home address, school name, or telephone number in a chat room or on bulletin boards.
• Never send a picture of yourself to someone you chat with on the computer without your parent's permission.
• Never write to someone who has made you feel uncomfortable or scared.
• Never meet someone you met online or have them visit you without the permission of your parents.
• Tell your parent/guardian(s) right away if you read anything on the Internet that makes you feel uncomfortable.
• Remember that people online may not be who they say they are. Someone who says they are a "13-year-old girl" could really be a "30-year-old man."

Remember! Safety on the Internet is just like everyday safety. You wouldn't walk up to strangers and tell them everything about yourself. You also wouldn't go into unfamiliar neighborhoods without permission.
